Dinner Plain Bike Park
Dinner Plain Bike Park
Dinner Plain is a small Alpine town located in the Victorian Alps near Mt Hotham at an elevation of 1520 metres.
The village is usually blanketed in snow from July to September so utilising the great bike tracks at Dinner Plain may not be possible during this period. However Hoys at Dinner Plain offer Fat Tyre bike rentals so if you want to take a ride on the snow that is an option.
The Trails
Dinner Plain offers a variety of trials encompassing all levels from first-timers through to avid experts.
The first thing you may recognise is the trails are all named after much loved dogs of Dinner Plain e.g. Baxter’s Run, Shut Up Ollie and Ferg’s, just to mention a few.
For First-Timers & Families
There is a loop trail (Collectors Cirque) that skirts around the Dinner Plain Village which is mostly flat with just a few short ups-and-downs. The surface of the track is lose gravel so this can make it a little more challenging for the young ones but the entire loop is child-friendly. Other family friendly options are Baxter’s Run and the Appian Way return (however this track can get muddy with pot hols of water).
For Mountain Bikers
Dinner Plain has X kms of hand-crafted single-track mountain bike trails with sections suitable for intermediate to experts.
The trails have undulating ridge lines with amazing views and massive descents through layers of forest with varying terrain, coasting XC, sneaky single tracks through the snowgums and over river crossings, fire trails and old stock/mining routes for some real bush tracks.
The fresh alpine air, the cooling of the altitude along with a canopy of snowgums provides a great environment for riding even on the hottest of days.
Scenic Trails
The Hotham-DP trail is a green trail with some blue sections. The surface is lose & compacted gravel and works best with mountain bikes (either electric or non-electric). You could navigate this trail with a hybrid but you might find yourself getting bogged down in some parts of the track in the lose gravel. This is a great day out if you leave DP & head up to the General Pub for lunch and spend some time exploring Mt Hotham before the big down-hill return home.
Guided Tours & Bike Hire
If you would like to have someone show you around, MTB guided rides are available, along with Mountain Bike hire through DP Riders Bike Club.
